Think twice before you ship drugs through the mail these days

Are you thinking of shipping drugs through the mail?

Think again.

Maybe you were thinking about asking a cousin in Colorado to send you some marijuana edibles for your birthday. Or maybe you’re brave enough to risk the “Dark Web” and have something a little stronger shipped to you from an overseas stranger. Whatever it is you might be thinking of doing, take our advice: Don’t do it.

Here’s why:

1. It’s illegal — even when it’s just marijuana

Even if you overlook the fact that marijuana is still mostly outlawed in Texas, shipping marijuana through the U.S. Postal Service is illegal because marijuana is still banned on the federal level. The United States Postal Service is a federal agency. If you send marijuana in any form through the mail, that’s considered drug trafficking (even if you’re sending it to yourself). At a minimum, for just a small amount, you can end up serving five years in jail and paying a $250,000 fine.

2. The authorities are wise to all the tricks

Drugs get disguised in the mail as all sort of things — including massage oils, health supplements and the stuffing inside children’s toys (to name a few). These days, no international packages get past this country’s border without being screened by humans, x-rayed by machines and sniffed by drug dogs. The odds are high that they’ll find whatever is hidden in those packages.

3. The drug-detecting technology in use is awing

Agents striving to stem the tide of drugs like fentanyl and opium into the United States are now using something called “the Gemini.” The Gemini uses a laser to scan a package and can identify 22,000 different substances — within seconds.

4. The authorities can’t find your dealer — but they can find you

The authorities know they can’t find an overseas drug supplier. If you have a U.S.-based dealer, the odds are good he or she is smart enough to cover any tracks. You, however, have to risk putting your name on the package. That means the police can find you. If they can’t arrest your supplier, who do you think they’ll go after?

Don’t take chances with your future or your freedom. If you’ve already made a mistake, it’s not too late to get help with your drug trafficking charge. Call an attorney today.
